Ondarroa is a Spanish
municipality of 9,732 inhabitants located in the autonomous community of the
Basque Country. It is part of the region of Lea Artibai, in the province of
Biscay.
Ondárroa was founded in the
fourteenth century. In 1351 it was part, with Bilbao, Plencia and Lequeitio, a
league against England, which had occupied Bayonne and Biarritz. The peace
treaty was signed on 21 December 1353 in Fuentarrabía.
The main source of wealth of
the city has always been a catch: Ondárroa is, in fact, one of the major
fishing ports of the Cantabrian Sea. At the time of Philip II the port of
Ondárroa experienced intense commercial activity and the activity as shipyard
was important until the second half of the twentieth century. Like all the
towns of the Basque coast, has provided many sailors to the fleet Spanish
military.

autonoma dei Paesi Baschi. Fa parte della comarca di Lea Artibai, nella
provincia di Biscaglia.
Ondárroa fu fondata nel XIV secolo. Nel 1351 fece parte, con Bilbao,
Plencia e Lequeitio, di una Lega contro l’Inghilterra, che aveva occupato
Bayonne e Biarritz. Il trattato di pace fu firmato il 21 dicembre 1353 a
Fuentarrabía.
La principale fonte di ricchezza della città è sempre stata la pesca:
Ondárroa è, infatti, uno dei principali porti pescherecci del Mar Cantabrico.
Ai tempi di Filippo II il porto di Ondárroa conobbe un’intensa attività
commerciale e l’attività come cantiere navale è stata importante fino alla seconda
metà del XX secolo. Come tutti i centri abitati della costa basca, ha fornito
molti marinai alla flotta militare spagnola.
